Dana White says Amanda Nunes and Cris Cyborg won’t be rematching next
As much as it makes sense to give Cris Cyborg an immediate rematch after her first loss in 13-years at UFC 232, UFC President Dana White has other plans.
At UFC 232 on December 29 2018, UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes did the unthinkable by defeating Cyborg. And she did so in incredibly devastating fashion.
Nunes would end the first ever female super fight in only 51 seconds by knocking out the seemingly unbeatable Cyborg. Thus making her the first and only female dual-division champion in MMA history.
The double champ now finds her in a position where she has multiple options for what could be next for her. Cyborg, on the other hand, does not have that same luxury, nor did she really ever. Even as a champion.
However, among those options for Nunes apparently won’t be a 145-pound fight or rematch with Cyborg as she recently said she’s ‘done with 145’. Today White cleared up the situation.
“There’s a reason we didn’t do it for a long time,” White said of Nunes vs Cyborg at the UFC Brooklyn pre-fight press conference. “It’s tough enough to defend one belt let alone two. Amanda’s going to have another fight. Cris is going to have another fight. We’ll see how that all plays out.
“Listen, everybody has their opinions or what they think they want at that point in time but should they both win another fight, I think a rematch between them is huge.
“It’s a big fight, it’s an important fight,” White continued. “Neither one of them were crazy about the first time either but we got it done. So we’ll see how everything plays out.”
With UFC 237 in Curitiba, Brazil coming up in May, this rematch would be a perfect fight to headline such a card. But obviously, that doesn’t seem all too likely.
If either of the two will be though, it’s safe to assume it will be Amanda Nunes.
