Dana White shares plan for Max Holloway after UFC 236
At UFC 236, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway moved up to the lightweight division to battle Dustin Poirier for interim gold, bravely putting his 13-fight win-streak on the line. Unfortunately for Holloway and his ever-growing fanbase, this hike up to lightweight didn’t go as he planned.
Though he put up a valiant fight, winning several rounds with his vintage, volume-based striking, he ultimately lost a decision to his bigger, stronger foe.
With his lightweight title dreams dashed — for now — Max Holloway has some decisions to make with respect to his next move.
UFC President Dana White is hoping that Holloway will now return to the featherweight division to defend his title.
“It’s crazy, what I didn’t expect is he looked small at 155,” White told the media at the UFC 236 post-fight press conference (via MMAjunkie). “So I look forward to him going back to 145.”
While Dana White spoke with the media post-fight, Max Holloway did not. That, White says, is because the featherweight champ was shuttled straight to the hospital.
“We took him straight from the Octagon to the hospital,” White said. “I told my guys, ‘I don’t want him doing any interviews. Take him straight to the hospital.’ He’s tough, he’s awesome, but I’d like to see him at 145 pounds again. Poirier looked much bigger than him in my opinion.”
