Dana White thinks fine of $250,000 and suspension of four to six months is fitting for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s UFC 229 post-fight antics
UFC 229 was anticipated to be the biggest event in UFC history. And according to UFC president Dana White, the numbers are reflecting that.
A fight is what we got what and what we expected in the big lightweight title main event between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. It was what came afterward that caught us all off guard.
Almost immediately after securing his first title defense via fourth-round submission (neck crank), Nurmagomedov jumped the Octagon wall and attacked McGregor’s cornerman and teammate, Bellator welterweight Dillon Danis.
By this point, all hell had broken loose in an and out of the Octagon.
With punishments soon to be handed out to all involved, including the fighters, White shared his thoughts to TMZ on what kind of punishment he believes his lightweight champion should receive.
“They took his whole purse right now and they’re talking about keeping his purse – I do not think that that should happen. You should not be able to keep his whole purse.
I think they should take a quarter of a million dollars ($250,000) from him. He absolutely keeps his title. And he’s going to get suspended, so maybe you give him a four to six months suspension.”
Between both Nurmagomedov and McGregor, this wasn’t the first time that extracurricular activity was started by one of the parties.
The most compared situation to this has been the incident that really started to snowball this whole rivalry which was McGregor’s bus attack during UFC 223 fight week in April. A situation that White believes can’t compare to this one.
“It’s different circumstances, you guys. This wasn’t at an event. This was in the bowels of the Barclays Center, it was a completely different situation. [McGregor] was dealing with the state of New York and the police. In this thing, [Nurmagomedov] was part of something that was regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He was at an event with more people that have ever been at an event for a UFC event in Vegas. There were tons of fans there. It’s a much different situation.”
As for what’s next for the undefeated champion, there is no clear answer yet. But White has something in mind and it’s something that we’ve all been thinking about for longer than we wish we had to.
“I don’t know [who’s next for him]. We have to see how this stuff plays out with Khabib and what’s next. Tony Ferguson looked amazing that night, that fight was incredible, so we’ll see what happens.”
