Daniel Cormier not worried about Jon Jones stealing Lesnar fight: ‘I know I’m going to fight him’
UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is set to defend his title opposite Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 230 on November 3. If Cormier wins this fight, he’s expected to compete in an ultra-lucrative showdown with former champ and current WWE star Brock Lesnar in his next fight.
That being said, any number of cruel twists of fate could deprive Daniel Cormier of this chance. He could lose his fight with Derrick Lewis. Worse still, his arch rival Jon Jones could defeat Alexander Gustafsson this December and move up to heavyweight for his own fight with Lesnar. Jones, after all, has campaigned for a fight with Lesnar in the past.
Speaking to reporters at the UFC 230 media day earlier this week Daniel Cormier assured he’s not worried about such a thing happening. He says he trusts the UFC to make good on its promise to him.
“No [I’m not worried about that],” Cormier told the media (via MMAjunkie). “I’ve got to be honest with you: Over the course of my career I haven’t been done like that. I haven’t had anything promised to me that hasn’t been delivered. The UFC’s been good to me. I don’t worry about that.
“I know I’m going to fight Lesnar. There’s nobody or anything that could change that. They’ve never done me like that, so there’s no reason to believe it would start now.”
If Daniel Cormier does indeed fight Brock Lesnar, he’s expecting it to be an absolute blockbuster of a pay-per-view. Lesnar’s previous fights have done huge numbers, after all. The heated encounter Cormier and Lesnar shared after UFC 226 won’t hurt either.
“When I was on the [UFC 200] card he was fighting Mark Hunt, he wasn’t fighting for the title or it might’ve been even bigger,” Cormier said. “Think about it: He fought Mark Hunt in the co-main event and we did 1.2 million buys. Imagine if he’s fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world? People will truly tune in.”
“When I was in there with Lesnar on July 7 and he pushed me, I was like, ‘Holy shit,’ I’m having a WrestleMania moment.’ I’ve got to be honest. I was having a WrestleMania moment. It was the greatest thing ever. I wanted to hit him, but my hand was hurting. He was big and I was kind of thrown off. His outfit was kind of jacked up. … I want to fight Brock. It will be fun.”
Do you think this much discussed fight between Brock Lesnar and Daniel Cormier will actually happen?
