Derrick Lewis reveals his lone concern for tonight’s fight with Junior Dos Santos
Derrick Lewis will square off with former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in the headliner of tonight’s UFC Witchita event.
Derrick Lewis (21-6 MMA) has not been seen in action since falling short in his bid to dethrone current UFC heavyweight title holder Daniel Cormier at November’s UFC 230 event in New York.
Prior to the setback, “The Black Beast” had strung together three straight victories over Marcin Tybura, Francis Ngannou and Alexander Volkov.
Despite his success inside the octagon, it has been evident that if there is anything lacking in Lewis’ arsenal it is has been his cardio.
The 34-year-old, who has stuggled to keep his breath in past fights, recently told reporters that he has been focused on hitting the treadmill ahead of tonight’s showdown with “JDS”.
“It’s all I’ve really been focused on the last few months, really, just conditioning,” Lewis said (via MMAJunkie). “No technique or nothing.”
As for the haters who believe Lewis is simply a brawler with no cardio, “The Black Beast” had the following message for his critics.
“I don’t care,” Derrick Lewis said. “(Expletive). By the time fight night comes, I’m 280 (pounds). So they (can) try to move around being 280 and move around 15 minutes and 25 minutes and see if they don’t get tired, no matter how much conditioning you got.”
Meanwhile, Junior dos Santos (20-5 MMA) was last seen in action at December’s UFC event Adelaide, where he scored a second round TKO victory over Tai Tuivasa.
