Donald Cerrone updates on rumored Conor McGregor fight

This Saturday, when the UFC debuts on ESPN+, Donald Cerrone returns to our screens for a fan friendly matchup with rising lightweight contender Alexander Hernandez.

Before this matchup with Hernandez was announced, it briefly sounded as though Donald Cerrone could be the man to welcome former UFC lightweight and featherweight champ Conor McGregor back to the Octagon — although the rumors of this fight never evolved into reality.

From the sounds of it, however, Cerrone is still working on making this fight with Conor McGregor happen — perhaps as soon as his next trip to the cage.

“We’re working for it, for sure,” Cerrone said ahead of his fight with Hernandez (via MMAjunkie). “Hopefully the next fight. Conor’s his own beast. He gets to dictate the spot what he wants, so it’s whether me and the UFC agree, it’s all kind of on him. He did a good job of cementing himself, so it’s all on him.”

Donald Cerrone last fought in November, when he defeated “Platinum” Mike Perry via first-round submission in the welterweight division. After this victory, Cerrone announced his intention to return to the lightweight division.

Conor McGregor last fought in October, in the main event of the record-breaking UFC 229 pay-per-view, losing via fourth-round submission to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event. This was the Irish superstar’s first fight in the cage since November of 2016, when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight belt. His fights with Alvarez and Nurmagomedov were interspersed by a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr., which he lost by 10th round TKO.
