Dustin Poirier makes prediction for Ferguson vs. Cerrone fight

By Tom Taylor - May 22, 2019

Dustin Poirier will get the next crack at UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Barring a shakeup courtesy of Conor McGregor, the next title shot beyond that will likely go to the winner of a UFC 238 fight between Tony Ferguson and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Depending on how things shake out, then, there’s a chance Poirier will find himself with the winner of Cerrone and Ferguson’s fight sometime late this year or early next.

Speaking on MMA Junkie Radio recently, Dustin Poirier made a prediction for this fight. While the oddsmakers — and likely most fans — are leaning toward a Ferguson win, Poirier believes Cowboy will ride again and pick up one of the biggest victories of his career at UFC 238.

“With the UFC, you never know, I could be defending against Max Holloway,” he joked, acknowledging that a win does not guarantee Ferguson or Cowboy a win.

“I think Cowboy wins that fight but we’ll see,” he continued, offering up a prediction for this UFC 238 fight. “I’m not even looking that far ahead. I never disrespect that work that needs to be done and I have a lot ahead of me with this Khabib fight.”

On the same episode of MMA Junkie Radio, Dustin Poirier updated on the negotiations for his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov. The fight is being targeted for UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi, but he says it’s far from official just yet.

“Everything is pointing to it happening in Abu Dhabi, September 7, me and Khabib,” Poirier said. “I’m not sure what the holdup is or what’s going on. I have no clue.”

Dustin Poirier last fought in the main event of UFC 236, when he defeated featherweight champ Max Holloway to win the UFC interim lightweight title.
