Last Saturday night, in the main event of the action-packed UFC 236 card, streaking lightweight contender Dustin Poirier stepped into the cage with reigning UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway to battle for the interim lightweight belt. The result was a riveting, five-round battle that left both men bruised and bloodied.

“Thank you for the battle @blessedmma you are a champion.
We need more people like you in MMA.”
– Dustin Poirier on Instagram.

Max Holloway recently sent Poirier a similar message, congratulating the Louisiana native and his wife Jolie on their victory.

“Life is chutes and ladders. Sometimes we gotta take that slide down to get to the next big ladder. It is what it is. We keep playing. We keep fighting. Congrats to Dustin and Jolie. They should’ve already had a belt. Diamonds are forever” – Max Holloway on Twitter.

Needless to say, there is an immeasurable amount of respect between these two fighters, and from the sounds of it, we could potentially see them do battle again in the future.

“My next fight has to be for a unification fight [with Khabib Nurmagomedov],” Poirier told MMAjunkie post-fight. “But I love Max. I’ll fight him five more times.”
