Frankie Edgar explains why he has not dropped down to bantamweight
Frankie Edgar has made a living off of fighting larger men.
The former UFC lightweight champion, has always been considered small, even while competing in the UFC’s featherweight division.
Despite his incredible success in both the lightweight and featherweight divisions, Frankie Edgar always seems to be questioned about a potential drop to 135-pounds.
The bantamweight division is currently ruled by T.J. Dillashaw, but also features a number of perennial contenders who would surely produce incredible fights with Frankie Edgar.
Prior to suffering an injury that forced him out of last weekend’s UFC Denver headliner with The Korean Zombie, Frankie Edgar discussed why he has never made the cut to 135-pounds.
“If you can make the weight and you can perform, all the power to you. That’s how this sport is set up. I’m not knocking anybody for that but if I wanted to be the best dieter, I’d f–king be a jockey,” Frankie Edgar told MMANYTT with a laugh. “I’m a little dude and I’ve always been a little dude and I think I like being the little guy in there battling the big dudes. I like to show that hard work and technique can overcome anything.”
Frankie Edgar will not completely rule out a potential move to the UFC’s bantamweight division. But after going 3-1 over his past four fights, “The Answer” knows he is on the cusp of earning another shot at the promotions coveted featherweight title.
“I just don’t feel I need to,” Frankie Edgar stated. “Could I? I probably could and maybe if an opportunity arose, maybe I would but I don’t feel the need for it.”
Frankie Edgar was last seen in action at April’s UFC Fight Night event in Atlantic City, where he scored a unanimous decision victory over Cub Swanson for the second time in his career.
Prior to the victory, the New Jersey native was coming off the first stoppage loss of his career to Brian Ortega at UFC 222.
