Frankie Edgar explains why he is “definitely the guy” to challenge Max Holloway next

By Christopher Taylor - December 10, 2018

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar was expected to challenge Max Holloway for the promotions featherweight title at UFC 222.

Unfortunately for fight fans, that contest failed to come to fruition after “Blessed” suffered an injury in training.

The cancellation marked the second time that a fight between the New Jersey native and proud Hawaiian had fallen through. The pair were initially slated to collide at UFC 218 in December of 2017, but Edgar was forced out with an injury.

Frankie Edgar would go on to take a short-notice fight with surging division contender Brian Ortega at March’s UFC 222 pay-per-view event. That decision ultimately cost “The Answer” his 145-pound title shot, as “T-City” went on to win the events co-headliner via first-round knockout.

Since then Frankie Edgar has gone on to score his second career victory over perennial featherweight contender Cub Swanson.

Speaking with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Frankie Edgar revealed that he has already called UFC President Dana White in hopes of being granted the next title opportunity against Max Holloway.

Holloway just defeated the aforementioned Ortega at last weekend’s UFC 231 in event in Toronto by way of fourth-round TKO.

“I already rang Dana up and he said we are going to talk,” Frankie Edgar told Helwani (via MMAMania). “I had that title shot, it was mine, and then Max got hurt, it happens. And on two weeks notice I just said throw anybody in there. I want to fight. Things didn’t go my way, obviously, I got caught with that shot. But, I ran it back with Cub and was able to get a win. I think I am next in line and I think we should go back to that fight. I think Holloway, not that he owes me anything, but, I think we want to get that one done.”

Frankie Edgar continued:

“I told (Dana), I gave my shot up, and maybe it wasn’t the best idea, but I thought I was going to win that fight and it didn’t go my way. And he said ‘we will see,’” explained Edgar. “If Max stays I am definitely the guy for him to fight at 145. If he goes up, who knows, I think Max wants to stay at 145 and we have unfinished business. I am not Ortega, and I am a different type of fighter than him, a different challenge for Max and I think I am the guy that can get it done.”
