Frankie Edgar says it would be a ‘shame’ if he never gets to fight Conor McGregor

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is always hanging around the title picture no matter the division.

Currently calling 145-pounds his home, Edgar has already fought for the title on two separate occasions, both of which resulted in losses to Jose Aldo.

After two dominant victories following the second opportunity, Edgar was set to get his third shot against current champion Max Holloway at UFC 218. Unfortunately for Edgar, an injury forced him from the bout thus leading to the fight being rebooked for UFC 222.

However, this time it would be Holloway who was forced out with injury thus leaving Edgar to fend off the streaking undefeated BJJ phenom, Brian Ortega.

Ortega would end up scoring the huge upset in just one round via knockout (the first and only knockout loss of Edgar’s career).

One win later and ‘The Answer’ is now ready to finally face off with Holloway. But if not him, he has someone else that he’s been close to fighting in the past in mind.

”I’m hoping I get Max,” Edgar told TMZ. “I’m hoping Max sticks around at ’45, and we get to finally get to square up. I think it makes the most sense. We were supposed to link up, and I think a lot of people talk about that matchup. I don’t think he’s fought someone like myself. I could definitely do some different things in there that Ortega can’t. So that’s what I’m gunning for.

“[If not Holloway], maybe Conor [McGregor]’s free. Conor wants to get down and fight. We were supposed to fight a long time too. If I’m not fighting for the belt, then I guess Conor’s the next best thing.”

After Conor McGregor defeated Jose Aldo for the featherweight title in December 2015, Edgar was the logical next title challenger. Instead, we saw McGregor move up with the intentions to capture lightweight gold.

“He’s the most popular guy of my era. Let’s be real, he is,” Edgar continued. “It’ll be a shame if I retire down the road and I get my kids and grandkids asking me if I ever fought Conor McGregor and I get to say no. I wanna say yeah.”

As of right now, there isn’t much telling as to what will be next for the champion in Holloway. But Edgar appears to be a pretty solid option, especially at 145-pounds and considering that the other top contender Renato Moicano just got a fight with Jose Aldo booked.
