Gunnar Nelson issues statement on loss to Leon Edwards
Gunnar Nelson was not without success in his UFC London co-main event battle with Leon Edwards, even climbing into full mount in the waning moments of the fight, but ultimately gave up a split decision loss to his British rival.
On Monday morning, the Icelandic welterweight contender took to social media to issue a quick statement on this setback, and thank his team, fans, and even Edwards for the learning experience.
“I’m obviously disappointed how things went but also overwhelmed by the support I got in England it really made this night one of the most memorable nights in the arena,” Nelson wrote. “Thanks so much to my team, family, fans and to Leon. A lot for me to learn from this fight, I will be back.”
With this setback against Edwards, Gunnar Nelson returns to the loss column after a bloody stoppage defeat of Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira. This victory was preceded by a controversial knockout loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio and a pair of wins over Alan Jouban and Albert Tumenov. The Icelandic star is now 17-4-1 in sum.
