Joanna Jedrzejczyk opens up on her future after UFC 231 loss to Valentina Shevchenko

On Saturday night, in the co-main event of UFC 231, former UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk battled the fearsome Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight belt. Unfortunately for Jedrzejczyk, this title shot did not go as planned, as she was out-duelled by Shevchenko for five rounds.

Despite this setback, Joanna Jedrzejczyk says she plans to stay in the flyweight division.

”I feel good in the flyweight division,” she said at the UFC 231 post-fight press conference (transcript via MMA Mania). “I see how my body reacted to the diet and a few more pounds. I was happy and in a good mood, I could do more. Definitely, it’s a good division for me.”

While Joanna Jedrzejczyk plans to stick to the flyweight division for now, she also hopes to battle for the strawweight title again in the future.

”I definitely want to challenge myself and chase my other dream and go for the strawweight belt again,” she said. “So I will wait for [Jessica] Andrade and Rose [Namajunas] to fight next year. Rose has only four months left to defend the belt, because otherwise she might lose the belt with no fight. That’s the thing. I was pretty busy champion, other champions are pretty busy, but if you don’t defend your title once a year, you’re losing the belt.”
