John Kavanagh weighs in on who should be next for Conor McGregor
As the days go on, the question of when and who Conor McGregor will fight next continues.
McGregor last fought at UFC 229 in October, where he took on current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for the belt. The fight marked McGregor’s return to the Octagon after a nearly two year hiatus.
Ultimately, the Irishman lost his fight with “The Eagle” in the fourth round by submission. Immediately following the setback, Conor was clamoring for a rematch against Nurmagomedov.
Soon after, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone called for a fight against McGregor following his win over Alexander Hernandez. The two sides showed interest in the fight and many believed the fight was next. And recently, UFC commentator Joe Rogan said it was a ‘done deal‘ which peaked fans interest.
However, nothing has been signed for McGregor’s next fight but all signs indicate that he is interested in fighting again. Once he does indeed return to the Octagon, his head coach, John Kavanagh believes it isn’t about the rank. Rather, it is about which fighter will motivate McGregor to train and prepare.
“You know what, it’s the match-up that interests Conor most,” Kavanagh said to MMA fréttir. “He has the world at his feet, he’s not fighting for anything other reason than that it’s fun to him. Which I think is the best reason. So, it’s got to be the match-up that gets him up in the morning.”
Who that is, is still unknown. The former champ-champ has options, whether it is, Nurmagomedov, Cerrone, Tony Ferguson or a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz. But, none of that can happen until McGregor’s Nevada State Athletic Suspension is over in April. Once that happens, a fight should happen soon thereafter, but as his coach says, it really is up to McGregor and what he wants next.
