Jon Jones responds to post-fight comments from Israel Adesanya

By Tom Taylor - April 14, 2019

Shortly after he defeated Kelvin Gastelum to capture the interim middleweight title at UFC 236, Israel Adesanya was asked about a potential fight with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Though Adesanya has previously expressed interest in a fight with Jones, he admitted that, fresh off a title-winning war with Gastelum, the light heavyweight champion is not on his radar at the moment.

“This is about me,” he said at the UFC 236 post-fight press conference (via MMAjunkie). “This moment is right now is about what me and what me Kelvin did tonight. None of that. I’ll address that at another time. But right now, it’s about me.”

Speaking on Twitter on Sunday morning, Jon Jones seemingly reacted to this comment from Israel Adesanya. From the sounds of it, he’s not letting the Nigerian-born striker off the hook that easily.

“Just waking up to the morning news, this is about you now bitch,” Jones wrote in a Tweet seemingly directed on Adesanya.

At present, Israel Adesanya can look forward to a title unifying showdown with undisputed champ Robert Whittaker. The winner of this fight can also look forward to a battle with long-time middleweight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

Yet, all that being said, UFC President Dana White seems to like the idea of a fight between Adesanya and Jones in the future.

“(Adesanya has) got Whittaker to look forward to now,” White said at the UFC 236 post-fight press conference. “Whittaker is a bad dude. He’s bigger than Kelvin, he hits harder than Kelvin, and he needs to focus on him right now.

“I know (Adesanya) and Jon Jones have been talking some smack, and listen, if he wins, and he becomes the middleweight champion, obviously I’d love to see him and Jon Jones fight. But we’ll see how everything plays out and timing. Because the other thing is if Israel fights Whittaker and wins, there’s other guys that have been waiting in line, too, to fight for the title. If (Ronaldo) ‘Jacare’ (Souza) keeps winning and doesn’t get a title fight, that guy might kill me.

“But that Jon Jones fight is going to be out there for Israel no matter what. That ain’t going anywhere.”

Do you think there is a Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya fight coming in the future?
