Jose Aldo expected to stay on UFC 237 card despite hospital visit
Last week, news broke that former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo had been hospitalized with a bacterial infection, casting uncertainty on the status of his compelling UFC 237 showdown with Alex Volkanovski.
Luckily, Jose Aldo has since been released from the hospital, and is expected to remain on the UFC 237 card despite this health scare.
Brazilian publication Combate provided an update on this situation after speaking with Aldo’s handler Andre Pederneiras (h/t MMA News):
“With the hospitalization, Jose Aldo ran the risk of being out of UFC Rio on May 11 With the high and a good recovery in the coming days, the 32-year-old former featherweight champion should have his presence confirmed at the event to face Alex Volkanovski.”
After losing the UFC featherweight title to Max Holloway, and failing to reclaim the belt in an immediate rematch with the same man, Jose Aldo has burst back into title contention with a pair of stoppage victories over top-ranked contenders Jeremy Stephens and Renato Moicano.
Alex Volkanovski, meanwhile, has gone 6-0 since joining the UFC, most recently taking out a pair of respected contenders in Chad Mendes and Darren Elkins.
Given the status of these two featherweight stars, their UFC 237 fight is widely viewed as a number-one-contender fight, particularly now that Max Holloway is hiking north to the lightweight division, where he’ll battle Dustin Poirier for interim gold at UFC 236.
How do you think Jose Aldo will perform against Alex Volkanovski?
