Kamaru Usman considers Colby Covington a “bigger fight” than Tyron Woodley
When Kamaru Usman defeated Rafael dos Anjos at The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale last Friday night, he asserted himself as one of the uppermost contenders in the crowded UFC welterweight division. In fact, UFC President Dana White suggested Usman might have even surpassed Colby Covington and earned himself a title fight with long-time welterweight champ Tyron Woodley.
Interestingly, however, Kamaru Usman seems to relish the opportunity to settle his beef with Colby Covington even more than he wants to fight Woodley for the title.
“I’ve said it before that it would be good to take the title away from Tyron because Tyron has been a long champion, defended the belt several times and he is the guy,” Usman said recently on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show (transcript via MMA Mania). “So of course it would be great for me to be able to dethrone him. But it would feel a whole hell of a lot better for me to beat the shit out of Colby ‘Duckington’, It would feel a whole hell of a lot better to beat that clown.”
“I think it’s actually a bigger fight because who in the world doesn’t want to see me beat him up,” Kamaru Usman added. “Everybody wants to see it. I get DM’s daily from Brazilians, people all the world asking me to beat the guy up. It would be sweet. But hey a champion’s a champion so once I get that belt wrapped around me, that feeling itself is going to good enough for me.”
Like Kamaru Usman, Colby Covington is riding an impressive decision defeat of the former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. While he was expected to fight Tyron Woodley for the title this year, injuries have slowed the fruition of this fight.
