Kevin Lee claims rematch with Dustin Poirier is “a step backward” for Conor McGregor
Perennial UFC lightweight contender Kevin Lee believes there is only one reason the promotion is considering booking a rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier.
That reason… To make the Irish star “feel good again.”
Kevin Lee (17-3 MMA), who will return to action in a rematch with Al Iaquinta tomorrow evening at UFC on FOX 31, recently spoke with MMAJunkie about the potential rematch between “Mystic Mac” and “The Diamond”.
“Dustin, to me, is not a serious competitor in this division. If Conor’s going to take a step backward and fight a man he already knocked out in the first round at 145 (pounds) – if he needs that steps backward to get himself feeling good again so that they can try and make some more money off him, then that’s on him,” Kevin Lee said.“But I put Poirier in another category. He’s in the more ‘fun fight’ category with Nate Diaz and some of these older guys that are just out there to have fun. I’m out here chasing titles.”
Dustin Poirier is currently riding a wave of momentum having put together a four-fight win streak, with three of those four victories coming by way of TKO.
Despite Dustin’s impressive success since moving up to the UFC’s 155-pound ranks, Kevin Lee believes “The Diamond” would still serve as a step backward for Conor McGregor.
The UFC’s biggest star, “Mystic Mac”, made his long awaited octagon return at September’s UFC 229 event in Las Vegas where he challenged undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The Irishman ultimately was defeated by “The Eagle” via fourth-round submission in that contest.
If Kevin Lee can score an impressive victory over Al Iaquinta at tomorrow’s UFC on FOX 31 event, the “MoTown Phenom” could potentially find himself in prime position for a future title shot or even a money fight with the likes of Conor McGregor.
