Let’s have some fun: Nate Diaz vs. Max Holloway at lightweight
Max Holloway handed Brian Ortega the first loss of his professional career earlier this month at UFC 231 and made it look easy.
The current UFC featherweight kingpin, Holloway battered “T-City” with a record-setting number of significant strikes on route to a fourth-round TKO victory.
Following his impressive performance on the tenth-island, UFC President Dana White hinted that he would like to see “Blessed” take on new challenges at 155-pounds.
Holloway is currently riding an insane thirteen-fight win streak, which includes two stoppage victories over former division kingpin Jose Aldo.
With that said, there are still a few featherweight challengers who Max Holloway has yet to face lurking in the shadows.
145-pound fighters such as Frankie Edgar, Renato Moicano, Zabit Magomedsharipov, Chad Mendes and Yair Rodriguez would all like an opportunity to put an end to the “Blessed Era”.
However, if Max Holloway’s next fight is to come at 155-pounds there are a plethora of options waiting for him at lightweight.
Obviously the UFC has the option to put on a super-fight between Max Holloway and current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
But that matchmaking wouldn’t likely sit well with former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson, who has rightfully earned the next shot at “The Eagle” after putting together an eleven-fight win streak.
UFC President Dana White recently stated that he hopes to put together a Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson lightweight title fight, this while scheduling a rematch between former division champion Conor McGregor and perennial contender Dustin Poirier.
If White’s plan comes to fruition, that would leave fan favorite Nate Diaz without an opponent.
So let’s have some fun. Why not book Max Holloway vs. Nate Diaz at 155-pounds?
Both men possess excellent boxing skills, great chins and incredible endurance.
Nate Diaz and Max Holloway are actually friends outside of the octagon, but a fight of this magnitude would likely be enough to persuade both men to put aside their friendship for at least twenty-five minutes.
Diaz has not competed inside the octagon since suffering a controversial majority decision loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 202.
“The Stockton Slugger” was slated to make his octagon return against Dustin Poirier at November’s UFC 230 event in New York. However, “The Diamond” was forced to pull out of that contest due to injury.
