Max Holloway compares his accomplishments to those of Brian Ortega
This Saturday night, in the main event of UFC 231 in Toronto, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will collide with undefeated challenger Brian Ortega.
Ahead of the UFC 231 card, this long-awaited Holloway vs. Ortega fight is being hailed as one of the best matchups ever — at least on paper. The two 27-year-old stars possess some of the most versatile and dangerous skillsets in the game — something they’ve proven on their respective win streaks.
Holloway will enter this fight on a jaw-dropping 12-fight win-streak, during which times he’s best opposition such as Charles Oliveira, Cub Swanson, Jeremy Stephens, Ricardo Lamas, Anthony Pettis, and the great Jose Aldo (twice). Ortega, meanwhile, enters the fight with a flawless 13-0 record, six of which have occurred in the UFC where he’s toppled top fighters like Renato Moicano, Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar.
Speaking at the UFC 231 press conference this week, the champion Max Holloway compared his incredible stretch of victories to those of Brian Ortega. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he feels he’s accomplished far more than his rival.
“He’s good,” Holloway said (transcript via MMA Fighting). “He’s a dangerous man, but everybody keeps talking about Brian and this and that. Everything the guy did, I did better. He’s on what, a six-fight win streak? I got 12. He beat a champion? I beat two — and I beat one of them twice. So at the end of the day, the ‘Blessed’ express is going around in a circle. We’re lapping you, bro. And I’m younger than you, so congratulations.”
Brian Ortega was given the chance to respond to this comment from Max Holloway, but chose to wait until Saturday to do his talking in the cage.
“Sometimes the best response is no response,” he said.
