Maycee Barber denies comparisons to Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey is still one of the biggest stars in MMA history. Very few fighters have realized the level of mainstream popularity that she has, and it’s unlikely that too many will do so in the future. In the eyes of some fans, however, rising flyweight contender Maycee Barber could well realize that same level of fame and success.
Just don’t call Maycee Barber the next Ronda Rousey.
While Barber has great respect for the former UFC bantamweight champion, she says she plans on doing things a little bit differently — particularly if she ever experiences a loss.
“I’m a completely different person from Ronda, and that’s no disrespect to her,” Barber said after her last win (via MMA Junkie). “She’s a phenomenal athlete, phenomenal fighter and she had an amazing career, but I want to take my career a little bit different. But if I ever do get a loss – which I’m going to continue to fight to make sure I never get one – but if I ever do, I hope I can come back a little bit differently than she did. But we’ll see. I’m hoping to not take that loss.”
Maycee Barber returned to the cage last weekend, on the main card of UFC Nashville, where she weathered some early trouble to stop JJ Aldrich in the second round.
Ronda Rousey has not fought since late 2017, when her comeback was spoiled by Amanda Nunes, who now holds both the bantamweight and featherweight belts. She’s signed with WWE, and is set to compete in the first all-female main event in the organization’s history at WrestleMania 35.
Do you think there are any similarities between Maycee Barber and Ronda Rousey?
