Michael Bisping urges Anderson Silva to retire

By Tom Taylor - May 12, 2019

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has once again found himself on the wrong end of a nasty leg-related TKO, as he was chopped down by Jared Cannonier in the co-main event of UFC 237 on Saturday night.

Having seen Silva come up short once again, recently retired MMA legend Michael Bisping is urging the Brazilian to hang up the gloves.

“Anderson Silva is a true legend of the sport – he’s given so much,” Bisping said on the UFC 237 post-fight show on ESPN+ (h/t MMA News). “(He was) a longtime champion, but he’s 44 years old. A lot of people wondered, ‘Why is he still fighting?’ I think tonight, even though he looked OK, the fight obviously ended. He took a little inside leg kick and I think that he tore his ACL. I don’t think we’ll ever see Anderson Silva fight again. He certainly doesn’t need to.

“Father Time has caught up (with him),” Bisping added. “With the greatest of respect, Anderson Silva needs to retire. He’s already given so much to this sport. He doesn’t need to give anymore. Enjoy retirement.”

Michael Bisping, who recently retired himself, got well acquainted with Anderson Silva in early 2016. The pair engaged in one of the year’s best fights, pummelling each other for five, frenetic rounds in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card in London, with the Brit ultimately winning by unanimous decision. He would later go on to capture the middleweight title himself, knocking out Luke Rockhold inside a round.

With his loss to Jared Cannonier, Anderson Silva is now a tough 1-6 (1 NC) in his last eight fights. Do you think the time has come for the Brazilian MMA legend to hang up the gloves? Join the debate in the comments section down below.
