On Saturday night, on the undercard of UFC 235, Mickey Gall returned to the Octagon to battle one of the most experienced fighters in UFC history, The Ultimate Fighter Season One winner Diego Sanchez.

Despite being labelled as the betting favorite heading into this fight, Mickey Gall was soundly walloped by his exponentially more experienced foe, and ultimately wilted under a storm of second-round ground strikes. It was Sanchez’s first stoppage victory since 2008.

Speaking on his Instagram account post-fight, Mickey Gall updated his fans with an explanation of his performance. He says gassed badly after an adrenaline dump. He also said he passed out during his cut down to the welterweight division’s 170-pound limit.

“I gassed hard in there,” Gall wrote. “Had an adrenaline dump. I passed out during the weight cut and my body shut down in the first round. I’m sorry to my friends family and fans. Send love to [Diego Sanchez] he’s a true legend. This was a nightmare come true for me. I promise I’ll be back soon and better.”

With this setback, Mickey Gall returns to the loss column after a first-round submission victory over George Sullivan. This win was preceded by a decision loss to Randy Brown — his first pro defeat. Gall began his career with a perfect 4-0 stretch. He’s now 5-2 in sum.

Diego Sanchez, meanwhile, is now on a two-fight streak, having also recently bested Craig White. These wins were preceded by a pair of knockout losses to Al Iaquinta and Matt Brown, and a decision defeat of Marcin Held. He’s now 28-11-0 overall.
