Du Plessis (20-2 MMA) squared off with former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (24-7 MMA) on the main card of tonight’s event in Las Vegas. The bout was deemed a number one contenders match with the winner getting a shot at reigning 185lbs kingpin Israel Adesanya.

The Octagon remained in Nevada for tonight’s UFC 290 event, a fourteen-bout fight card headlined by Alex Volkanovski vs. Yair Rodriguez. The highly anticipated featherweight title unification bout proved to be another amazing performance from Alex Volkanovski. ‘The Great’ was able to utilize his wrestling in the early rounds to get off some heavy ground and pound. After blooding up ‘El Pantera’ on the canvas, the Aussie was able to drop Rodriguez with a right hand in round three. From there, he unleashed some nasty ground and pound which forced the referee to jump in and call the fight.

Tonight’s UFC 290 event was headlined by a men’s featherweight title fight between Alex Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez. Volkanovski (26-2 MMA) was returning to action for the first time since suffering a razor close decision loss to Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight title back in February of this year. That controversial setback had snapped the Aussie’s incredible 22-fight win streak, which included four straight title defenses at featherweight.

The former UFC welterweight champion entered his last fight looking to rebound, this after suffering a TKO loss to Bryan Barberena in his most previous effort at UFC 276. Prior to his setback to ‘Bam Bam’, ‘Ruthless’ had earned a TKO victory over fellow MMA legend Nick Diaz at UFC 266.

While the former light-heavyweight repeatedly called for a clash with Stipe Miocic, it failed to come to fruition. As a result, Jon Jones faced ‘Bon Gamin’ in the main event of UFC 285, and made quick work in his return.

Former welterweight contender Nate Diaz has admitted that pay had nothing to do with his UFC exit. The Stockton native has been out of the cage since his UFC 279 clash with Tony Ferguson last September. Originally slated to face Khamzat Chimaev, the bout with ‘El Cucuy’ was made after a bad weight miss. In the makeshift pay-per-view main event, Nate Diaz won by fourth-round submission.

Kamuela Kirk is finally back in action. Kirk has not fought since March of 2022 when he suffered a submission loss to Damon Jackson in his second UFC fight. In his debut, he beat Makwan Amirkhani after stepping up on short notice. After the loss, Kirk realized it was time to move to lightweight. Once he made the move, he was booked to face Esteban Ribovics at UFC 285 in March.

Shannon Ross is looking to prove to the doubters that he belongs in the UFC. Ross suffered a TKO loss to Vinicius Salvador on the Contender Series, but it was revealed he fought with appendicitis, so Dana White signed him. In his debut, he suffered a 59-second knockout loss to Kleydson Rodrigues and wasn’t sure what would be next after the setback.

Grant Dawson knows he sent a message to the lightweight division with his win over Damir Imsagulov. Dawson was taking on Ismagulov in the co-main event, and the ATT fighter dominated Ismagulov over all three rounds to get the decision win. Although Grant Dawson wanted the stoppage win, he says he is happy with his performance as he dominated Ismagulov more than Arman Tsarukayn did.
