The Octagon returns to Newark, New Jersey, for tonight’s UFC 288 event, a twelve-bout fight card headlined by Aljamain Sterling vs. Henry Cejudo. Sterling (22-3 MMA) will be returning to action for the first time since scoring a TKO victory over TJ Dillashaw in October of last year. That win marked ‘FunkMaster’s’ second defense of his bantamweight belt, as he had previously defeated Petr Yan by split decision after claiming the belt from the Russian via DQ.

Aljamain Sterling has a theory as to why Henry Cejudo retired when he did. After Cejudo defended his bantamweight title for the first time with a TKO win over Dominick Cruz back at UFC 249 in May 2020, he announced his retirement from the sport. Yet, three years later, he is coming out of retirement in the main event of UFC 288 as he looks to reclaim the 135lbs title against Sterling.

In the co-main event of the pay-per-view card from Newark, New Jersey, Muhammad and Burns stepped up on short notice and agreed to a five-round welterweight scrap. It’s a pivotal fight for the division as UFC president Dana White has already said the winner of this fight will face the winner of Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington.

The lead-up to the UFC 288 main event, which sees Sterling defending his bantamweight title against Cejudo, has been full of trash-talking. The two have taken countless shots at one another and even Cejudo’s team has gotten into the trash-talking to add to the hype of the scrap.

Saturday, May 6, in Newark, New Jersey, Cejudo is set to make his return to competition at UFC 288 after a three-year hiatus from the sport. The Olympic gold medalist closed the curtain on his career in 2020 after a successful bantamweight title defence over Dominick Cruz at UFC 249.

UFC 288 fighter Kron Gracie believes that the sport of MMA would benefit from having one-round fights as opposed to the current structure. Fight fans have grown accustomed to seeing fights that last for three five-minute rounds or five five-minute rounds. In the Pride FC days, the first round would last 10 minutes, with the second and third rounds lasting five minutes each for Japanese events. If the bout was contested within a Grand Prix, that fight would have two rounds, with the first being scheduled for 10 minutes and the second lasting five minutes.

Porter fought back in February and suffered a first-round knockout loss to Justin Tafa and just three months later, he is already making his return. Kron Gracie is clearly not a fan of former UFC ‘champ champ’ Henry Cejudo. On fight week, fighters have plenty of obligations including signing the fight posters. During that time, often two fighters sign it together and that was the case with Gracie and Cejudo. As the two began signing posters, Cejudo asked Gracie if Nate Diaz was going to come to the fight which Gracie said no.

However, the former two-weight division champion didn’t reveal how the gash occurred, but O’Malley has his own simple conspiracy about how it got there.
