Spicely and Perez were set to collide at UFC on ESPN+ 31, which went down on Saturday at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Spicely withdrew from the fight after his weight cut hit a snag.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao is the latest big name to sign with upstart MMA promotion Taura MMA, according to a report from MMA Fighting. Barao is expected to compete in the promotion’s featherweight division, and will make his debut—the first fight of a three-fight deal—sometime later this year. His debut opponent has not yet been identified.

Brunson picked up one of the most impressive wins of his UFC career to date when he finished top prospect Edmen Shahbazyan with a third-round TKO. Brunson was a +300 betting underdog heading into the fight and few gave him a chance to win, but he was able to beat the odds by using his wrestling to tire his younger opponent out, before beating him with ground and pound until referee Herb Dean stopped the fight in the third round.

UFC president Dana White shot down speculation about a potential crossover fight between UFC superstar Conor McGregor and boxing legend Manny Pacquiao. A fight between McGregor and Pacquiao has been speculated for years, ever since McGregor fought Floyd Mayweather. If McGregor were to ever fight Pacquiao, it would more than likely be in a boxing match. Even though it might seem like a ridiculous idea, we saw the record-breaking numbers that Mayweather and McGregor had, so even though it might seem crazy at first glance, it’s still something that fans and media have speculated about.

In the main event of the evening, Brunson pulled off a stunning upset as he was able to defeat highly-touted prospect Edmen Shahbazyan via third-round TKO. Brunson was a +300 betting underdog heading into the fight and not many gave him a chance to win. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Brunson dominated Shahbazyan with his wrestling and ground-and-pound to pick up one of his most impressive wins yet.

UFC heavyweight prospect Tanner Boser will make a quick return to the Octagon when he takes on former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski this fall. Boser just picked up two quick wins by KO over Phillipe Lins and Raphael Pessoa in June and July, respectively, and the UFC matchmakers evidently want to keep him busy. The Canadian heavyweight prospect, who earned a $50,000 bonus for the Pessoa KO on Fight Island, will face off against arguably the toughest test of his career to date when he takes on Arlovski. The fight will take place on October 3 at a location that has yet to be determined.

UFC women’s flyweight contender Joanne Calderwood has released a statement following her first-round submission loss to Jennifer Maia at UFC Vegas 5. Calderwood took the fight against Maia on short notice, sacrificing a title shot against UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko and taking a risk to pick a win against Maia. Unfortunately for Calderwood, things didn’t go as planned as she was taken to the mat and tapped out in the first round by a vicious armbar from Maia. UFC president Dana White later confirmed Maia will now get the next title shot at 125lbs.

UFC middleweight Trevin Giles has released a statement after fainting before his fight against Kevin Holland at UFC Vegas 5. Giles was set to open up the main card against Holland. However, he fainted while getting ready to walk to the Octagon and the fight was called off at the last second. Giles woke up soon after and said that he still wanted to take the fight, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission called the fight off due to the health and safety of Giles, who also works as a police officer in Houston.

UFC president Dana White confirmed that Jennifer Maia is next in line to fight UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko. Maia picked up the biggest win of her UFC career to date when she tapped out Joanne Calderwood with a first-round armbar at UFC Vegas 5. The victory improved Maia to 3-2 overall in the UFC, with previous victories over Roxanne Modafferi and Alexis Davis. By beating Calderwood, who was next in line to fight Shevchenko before taking this short-notice fight, Maia has elevated herself to an elite position at women’s 125lbs.

UFC middleweight prospect Edmen Shahbazyan has released a statement following his third-round TKO loss to Derek Brunson at UFC Vegas 5. Shahbazyan’s first UFC main event did not go as planned. After a strong start in the first round, the 22-year-old Californian began to fade badly in the second round. Brunson turned on the gas and hurt Shahbazyan, nearly finishing him with ground and pound just before the end of the second round. The fight somehow was allowed to enter the third round, but referee Herb Dean decided he had finally seen enough and stopped the fight early in the third and final round after Shahbazyan ate a few more big shots.

Brunson (21-7 MMA) and Shahbazyan (11-1 MMA) squared off at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, with the middleweight veteran emerging victorious by way of third round TKO.
