Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Claudia Gadelha officially announced as coaches for The Ultimate Fighter 23

The coaches for The Ultimate Fighter 23 were officially announced on Sunday during the UFC Fight Night 81 broadcast. UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk said that she was likely going to be one of the coaches recently and she in fact set to be a coach against former opponent Claudia Gadelha. Jedrzejczyk and Gadelha fought back in December 2014 with Jedrzejczyk being awarded a close split decision. The two are set to rematch at the show Finale on July 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is also the day before UFC 200.

UFC veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and part of the team at JacksonWink MMA Academy put together a photo for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Cerrone posted the photo to his Instagram account where he is the only white person in the photo with the rest of the team glaring at him. Obviously, the guys posed for the picture all in fun and it looks like they didn’t take the holiday off from the gym.

It was a tough night for Matt Mitrione and his eyes on Sunday night. After suffering accidental eye pokes from Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 81 in Boston, Mitrione suffered a broken orbital floor and injured shoulder at the hands of Browne after a third round TKO stoppage. Mitrione’s eye was in terrible condition after the fight was stopped and Mitrione revealed his injuries through an update Twitter.

The UFC bantamweight title was on the line in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ in Boston, as current champion T.J. Dillashaw (12-2 MMA) squared off with former title holder Dominick Cruz (20-1 MMA). No touch of gloves to start this one. Dillashaw opens with a body kick. Quick takedown by Cruz. T.J right back to his feet. Good leg kick from Cruz. Nice right hand from the former champ. Head kick misses for Dillashaw who falls. Cruz on top briefly but T.J. scrambles free. Good shot to the body from Cruz. Nice leg kick by Dillashaw. Cruz returns with a right hand. And another. Very crisp left hand lands from Cruz who seems to be breathing hard. Dillashaw misses with a right but lands a good body kick. Good three-punch combo from Cruz. Nice right hand from Dillashaw. Good punches from both fighters land. A left from Dillashaw. Cruz with another right. Dillashaw tries a takedown but Cruz stuffs it to end round 1.

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (18-4 MMA) took on former Bellator lightweight title holder Eddie Alvarez (27-4 MMA) in the co-main event of ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ in Boston. Round one begins with an Eddie Alvarez leg kick. Eddie shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Pettis is trying to use the fence to get back to his feet. He does, but eats some punches from Eddie to do it. Alvarez shoots back in for another takedown. The lightweights battle in the clinch against the fence. Eddie shoots low for another takedown. Pettis stuffs it. Alvarez scores a takedown with an inside trip. Pettis bounces back to his feet. Pettis lands a good kick. He tries a spinning kick but Eddie catches it and takes him down. Pettis is back up and lands a brutal kick to the body of Alvarez. Eddie eats it and moves forward. Eddie with a leg kick. Another hard body kick from Pettis. Good right for Eddie lands. Back in the clinch and Eddie lands a knee. The horn sounds to end round one.

A lightweight bout between Ross Pearson (18-10 MMA) and Francisco Trinaldo (19-4 MMA) kicked off tonight’s ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ main card in Boston. Round one begins and both men exchange low kicks. Trinaldo throws a front kick to the body. Pearson responds with a leg kick followed by a head kick that is blocked. Trinaldo throws a lead left that misses. Pearson is stalking him. Big body kick by Ross. Good left from Francisco. He tries a head kick but just misses. Person throws some kicks. Another big head kick that misses from Trinaldo. Pearson responds with a body kick and then a right hand. Leg kick from Ross. Good left jab lands for Trinaldo and then a knee. Good right hand by Pearson. Both men throw and miss head kicks. Head kick from Trinaldo is blocked by Pearson. Another high kick gets through for Trinaldo who ends the round by slamming Pearson.

A welterweight bout between Patrick Cote (23-9 MMA) and Ben Saunders (19-7-2 MMA) took place during tonight’s ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ card in Boston. Cote starts off by chopping at the legs of Ben. Saunders responds with a body kick before earning an early takedown. “The Predator” throws up an armbar and almost locks it in from guard. The fighters scramble and Cote ends up in top position. Excellent ground and pound from the Canadian. Cote lands some more shots from top position to close out round one.
