Pedro Munhoz fires back at ‘scumbag’ Aljamain Sterling over drug-test comments
Doping insinuations aren’t taken lightly in MMA, and bantamweight fighter Pedro Munhoz is no exception. Pedro Munhoz recently fired back at Aljamain Sterling and called him a scumbag following his recent drug-test comments.
Sterling has previously said that Munhoz should be tested ‘properly’ ahead of their scheduled UFC 238 fight this weekend. Munhoz reacted negatively to the comment, and the pair have made jabs back and forth since. Sterling said:
“… If that really fired him up like that, then maybe there is some truth to that drug test failure. You see that his team had four or five guys failed within that same year and – if I’m not mistaken – for the same substance.”
Munhoz tested positive for “exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites” in Oct. 2014 after a submission victory over Jerrod Sanders at UFC 54. The fight was overturned, but Munhoz maintains that he unknowingly took the banned substance.
The Brazilian fighter, Munhoz, has issued a scathing response to Sterling. During an interview today with The Score he said,
“(Sterling) says something that’s not a fact…It was before USADA. We have the chain of custody when it happened. It was a long battle that went back and forth. Since then, I’ve been tested 25 times. Samples were for blood, EPO, things like that. I think he’s just giving excuses for the beating he’s going to get on June 8.
The stakes are high for the fight between Pedro Munhoz and Aljamain Sterling. The winner will likely get a title shot and Munhoz does not take this lightly. Munhoz does not want negative comments that he deems unsubstantiated:
‘I don’t like that kind of stuff, you want to promote the fight, yeah go ahead. … after he said (the comments) it was literally week a week later, I got mail from USADA saying I was 25 times tested. I was like ‘Here, you’re a f***ing scumbag. So like, what are you talking about?’ Munhoz said.
In contrast, Sterling has been very vocal and made it clear he thinks he will win. He said previously:
“I think when he realizes I’m just too long, too rangy, I’m going to be too fast for him… Eventually, he’s going to make the mistake of shooting in for the shot. I think I’m going to ‘Pedro Munhoz’, Pedro Munhoz.”
Both fighters have outstanding grappling ability. ‘The Young Punisher’ Munhoz is a BJJ black belt and is confident he will outclass Sterling in the octagon.
“I know he’s gonna just be running and try to grapple me, avoiding the fight, because, you know, he’s scared. It’s a bad fight for him, you know,” Munhoz said.
“He’s gonna try to wrestle me, great, so I’m gonna take your head out. You’re gonna do jiu-jitsu on me, great. You’re gonna stand with me, you know, I’m gonna knock you out,” said Munhoz
Pedro Munhoz wants the opportunity to fight against Marlon Moraes or Henry Cejudo. If either fighter has to withdraw from the vacant bantamweight title fight at UFC 238, Munhoz is happy to take the spot. He said:
“If something happens the week of the fight or something, you know, for me it’s not a big issue making 135 (pounds).”
