Ray Borg announces move up to the bantamweight division

For the many fighters that have been competing for the UFC at 125-pounds over the years, it appears that it’s time to move on, whether that be by leaving the promotion entirely or by changing weight classes.

It has been a rather rough year for one of the top-ranked contenders at 125-pounds, Ray “The Tazmexican Devil” Borg as he has had four consecutive fight cancellations along with aiding his son through a battle tougher than any fight that Borg could compete in himself.

Borg’s most recent fight cancellation came just days prior to UFC Denver that took place two weeks ago when he was supposed to face Joseph Benavidez. Unfortunately, Borg fell ill and was forced out of the bout.

Since then, the news has surfaced that Borg’s division appears to be fading away before our very eyes as several fighters have been let go.

Instead of being let go, many have imagined that some of the top fighters in the division will at least get their chance to move up to the bantamweight division. As Borg revealed yesterday on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, that will be the case for him as he’s moving up.

In the end, this could be a blessing in disguise for Borg who has had multiple instances where he has missed weight in his UFC tenure.

For the 25-year old Borg, his last fight came in October 2017 when he challenged Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight championship in his first crack at the gold.

Since then Borg has been scheduled to face Brandon Moreno on three separate occasions, one of which was canceled due to the UFC 223 bus incident which resulted in Borg suffering corneal abrasions from getting broken glass in his eyes.

It will be interesting to see how many other flyweights join Ray Borg in the move up to 135-pounds.
