Report | Daniel Cormier vs Derrick Lewis heavyweight title fight in discussion for UFC 230

Right when we thought that all the craziness in regards to UFC 230 was over…we get hit with some more surprising possibilities.

UFC 230 is the UFC’s return to Madison Square Garden and takes place on November 3. Announced as the headliner last week to the dissatisfaction of many was the vacant flyweight title bout between Valentina Shevchenko and No. 4 ranked contender, Sijara Eubanks.

However, it seems that the UFC may still be trying to bolster up this card to be as big as it possibly can be despite the clock ticking away.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto has now reported that a heavyweight title clash between champion Daniel Cormier and Derrick Lewis is now being discussed as a possible addition to the big card.

Per sources, UFC has opened talks around a Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis heavyweight title fight to headline UFC 230 on Nov. 3 in New York. This would be coming, obviously, off of Lewis's come-from-behind win on Saturday at UFC 229. Not a done deal, but it's being explored.

Per sources, UFC has opened talks around a Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis heavyweight title fight to headline UFC 230 on Nov. 3 in New York. This would be coming, obviously, off of Lewis’s come-from-behind win on Saturday at UFC 229. Not a done deal, but it’s being explored.

Lewis just recently scored a massive come from behind knockout victory over Alexander Volkov this past Saturday at UFC 229. The win extended Lewis’ winning streak to three.

As for the current double champ, Cormier, he hasn’t fought since winning the heavyweight crown in July against Stipe Miocic. He’s been recovering from a hand injury since and has repeatedly stated that he wants two more fights before his birthday in March which is when he’ll call it a career.

Those two fights did not include Lewis though which makes the idea of this fight randomly coming up a very interesting thing. It just shows how desperate the UFC may be to make this event as good as it should be after seeing all the backlash.

Nothing is done yet, but it will be interesting to see how things get 100 percent finalized for UFC 230 as it only nears closer.
