Report | Holly Holm could get next crack at Amanda Nunes

By Tom Taylor - February 1, 2019

Until very recently, former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm was expected to fight Aspen Ladd at UFC 235 on March 2. Then, at last night’s UFC 235 press conference, UFC President Dana White casually dropped the news that Holm would not be competing on the card after all.

In the wake of this news, many members of the MMA community guessed that Holly Holm could be reallocated to a title fight with Amanda Nunes, who currently owns the UFC bantamweight and featherweight belts. Brazilian publication Combate is reporting that this is indeed the case.

According to Combate’s report, Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm could meet at UFC 237 on May 11, which goes down inside the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil.

While this all certainly makes sense, it’s worth noting that Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez told ESPN that his fighter withdrew from UFC 235 due to contract issues — not to partake in a different fight.

“We’re in negotiations on a contract extension right now,” Fresquez said. “She’s very disappointed this fight is not happening, but she understands this is a business. We’re in the middle of those negotiations right now, and everybody thought it would be best to get through that.”

Combate is also reporting that a strawweight bout between top contenders Nina Ansaroff, Nunes’ fiancee, and Tatiana Suarez is also headed to UFC 237.

UFC 237 is currently set to include a strawweight title fight between reigning champion Rose Namajunas and fearsome challenge Jessica Andrade.
