Ronda Rousey gives her take on UFC 229 brawl, doesn’t think Khabib or McGregor should get ‘special treatment’

Pretty much everybody has an opinion on the wild, post-fight brawl that occurred shortly after Khabib Nurmagomedov submitted Conor McGregor in the UFC 229 main event last weekend. Former women’s bantamweight champion and current WWE star Ronda Rousey certainly does.

In Rousey’s opinion, this post-fight brawl is the kind of thing the UFC should work hard to avoid in the future.

“I just really hope it doesn’t become an ongoing trend,” Rousey told TMZ Sports this week (transcript via MMAjunkie). “I want people to feel safe bringing their kids to fights and things like that. I hope this isn’t an ongoing trend and just a single occurrence.”

While both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor are facing fines and suspensions for their role in this UFC 229 chaos, it’s extremely unlikely either man will be seriously punished by the UFC. They certainly won’t be released from the organization. In the opinion of Ronda Rousey, this is the latest instance of the promotion’s more valuable fighters getting preferential treatment over their peers — a trend she considers unfair and troubling.

“I just feel like there has to be equal treatment all the way across the board,” Ronda Rousey said. “I don’t think that anyone should get special treatment because they’re a bigger draw. I think that’s the same when it comes to performance-enhancing drugs, when it comes to felonies, when it comes to hit-and-runs, or anything like that. There’s too much preferential treatment given to the high-profile fighters, and I think there needs to be equal discipline across the board, no matter who you are, because people are going to start thinking once they get to a certain level the rules don’t apply to them.”
