Stipe Miocic responds to Jon Jones

By Cole Shelton - March 27, 2019

Jon Jones’ potential move up to heavyweight may be happening sooner than anticipated. If he does move up, the fight that is expected to take place will pit “Bones” against Stipe Miocic.

The rumors first started when ESPN analyst and Bellator fighter, Chael Sonnen mentioned the two possibly fighting each other this July.

“Stipe Miocic, who has kind of been sitting out and playing hardball, all of a sudden is willing to come to the table for Jon Jones?” Sonnen said. “That’s compelling as hell to me.

“And it does serve the purpose of setting somebody big up for Daniel [Cormier] because whoever comes out of that fight – people are going to say ‘I want to see you take on Daniel.”

Soon after that, Jones posted on Twitter that he is down for a scrap with the former UFC heavyweight kingpin.

“I don’t think you guys are ready to witness @stipemiocic and I, would July give you all enough time?” Jones tweeted.

Jones’ tweet spawned a quick response from Miocic, who seems very interested in a July showdown with “Bones”.

“Been ready see you there,” Miocic replied.

The fight would most likely take place during International Fight Week this July in Las Vegas.

Jones, who is the reigning light heavyweight champion, last fought at UFC 235 where he beat Anthony Smith by unanimous decision. Prior to that, Jones was coming off a knockout victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232, in which he reclaimed the promotions 205-pound strap.

Miocic, on the other hand, last fought at International Fight Week in 2018. That night at UFC 226, Miocic suffered a knockout loss to Daniel Cormier in the very first round.

Ever since his setback to “DC”, Stipe has been calling for a rematch. Now, however, it appears he is willing to take a big fight in welcoming Jon Jones to the heavyweight division.
