Tony Ferguson takes aim at Khabib Nurmagomedov after champ’s Mayweather callout
Speaking at a press conference in Moscow earlier this week, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov announced that he would prefer a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather to an MMA bout with Tony Ferguson for his next fight.
“For legacy and in the sense of the money aspect, and in a sporting sense, I think the Mayweather fight is much more interesting,” Nurmagomedov said, adding that there’s not much sense in discussing his next fight until he’s sorted out his situation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. “The athletics commission needs to finish up first and then we’ll talk.”
Unsurprisingly, this comment from Khabib Nurmagomedov did not go over well with Tony Ferguson. Ferguson, who is currently on a 11-fight win-streak and is the former UFC interim lightweight champion, feels he has more than earned a shot at the belt.
He responded to the champ’s comments on Twitter.

While Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently chasing a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, it’s worth noting that UFC President Dana White has already stomped this possibility out. He says Tony Ferguson is most likely the next man in line for the lightweight champ.
“As a fight fan, you’ve got to go with Tony,” White told ESPN recently. “Tony had the belt, tweaked his knee, got stripped, this fight happens — Tony never lost the [interim] belt in a fight. Neither did Conor, but Conor got the opportunity to actually fight [Nurmagomedov]. I think Tony deserves the next shot.”
Do you think Tony Ferguson will ever get his long-awaited fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov?
