Tyron Woodley issues statement following UFC 235 title loss to Kamaru Usman

Tyron Woodley put his welterweight title on the line against Kamaru Usman in the co-headliner of last night’s UFC 235 event in Las Vegas.

Woodley entered last night’s matchup with Usman on a seven-fight undefeated streak, his latest being a submission win over Darren Till at UFC 228.

Meanwhile, “The Nigerian Nightmare” was also carrying a ton of momentum into last night’s UFC 235 welterweight title fight. Kamaru entered the contest sporting a thirteen fight win streak, his latest being a lopsided decision win over Rafael dos Anjos this past November.

As was the case in his fight with “RDA”, Usman utilized a ton of pressure and his strong wrestling to frustrate and batter Woodley for the better part of twenty-five minutes last night in Vegas.

When the horn sounded to end the fifth and final round it was clear that Kamaru Usman had done more than enough to be crowned the promotions new welterweight champion.

The lopsided setback marked Tyron Woodley’s first loss in almost five years. “T-Wood’s” most previous defeat had come to Rory MacDonald via decision at UFC 174 back in June of 2014.

Shortly following his UFC 235 title loss to Kamaru Usman, Tyron Woodley took to Instagram where he shared a live video in which he addressed his fans and discussed the loss.

“You win some and you lose some.” Woodley stated. “Obviously tonight I didn’t plan on losing my belt. It is kind of a travesty to me. I’ve been pretty high and pretty low. But I definitely want to tell the fans I appreciate the support regardless. God is still always on the throne. So whether I win or lose I am always a champion. I am going to come back harder. I am going to get my belt back and do what I need to do.”

Tyron Woodley continued:

“You know one thing I thought a lot about guys. I had this all mapped out, you know what I was going to do. I was going to fight Usman, I was going to fight Colby (Covington) and then I was going to go after the 185-pound belt and try to be a champion at middleweight. But sometimes god has a different plan for you… And if I am saying that I am the greatest welterweight of all time, then the way I take this adversity, the way I take this bump in the road, it will show you why I am the greatest. Shoutout to Usman, he came out and put on a great performance. He put a game plan together and executed. I didn’t feel myself, I felt flat. He was the better man tonight. Anyways I thought I’d come on here and tell all of you guys tonight was not my night.”

Following last night’s UFC 235 main event, UFC President Dana White announced that Colby Covington would be the next man to challenge the promotions newly crowned welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
