Tyron Woodley responds to potential GSP retirement with interesting invitation

By Tom Taylor - February 21, 2019

Reigning UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley has been chasing a fight with former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre for years. Unfortunately for him, it now sounds as though St-Pierre is hanging up the gloves for good. The Canadian legend is expected to announce his retirement from mixed martial arts at a press conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this very morning.

Tyron Woodley, of course, is disappointed that he’ll likely never have the chance to test his mettle against the man many fans consider the greatest fighter of all time. That being said, he’s got an interesting solution.

He’s hoping to spend some time with Georges St-Pierre in the gym.

Woodley addressed St-Pierre’s retirement in the comment section of an Instagram post from Ariel Helwani on the subject.

“Just had a vision of calling him out after my next fight,” Woodley wrote. “Congrats to one of the Greatest! [Georges St-Pierre] since we will never cross paths in the octagon would love to do so in the gym! Would be an honor. You have had the best run of any fighter to grace the caged canvas!”

Georges St-Pierre defended the UFC welterweight title nine consecutive times, against ferocious foes like Jon Fitch, BJ Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Jake Shields, Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz and Johny Hendricks. If he indeed retires this morning, he’ll do so with a jaw-dropping 26-2 record.

Tyron Woodley, meanwhile, is rapidly gaining on St-Pierre in the welterweight title defense department. He’s defended the belt four times, against Stephen Thomson (twice), Demian Maia and Darren Till, and will look to do so again against Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 on March 2. He’s 19-3-1 overall.
