What’s next for Jose Aldo and Rob Font after UFC Vegas 44?
In the main event of UFC Vegas 44, top-five bantamweights threw done as Rob Font took on Jose Aldo in a pivotal matchup.
Aldo entered the fight on a two-fight winning streak after beating Pedro Munhoz and Marlon Vera after losing three straight including a TKO loss to Petr Yan for the vacant belt. Font, meanwhile, was riding high after a decision win over Cody Garbrandt.
In the end, it was Aldo winning a dominant decision as he won all five rounds. Now, after the event, here is what I think should be next for Aldo and Font.
Jose Aldo
Jose Aldo has looked impressive as of late and his win over Font surprised many as he was the betting underdog. He knocked Font down and showed off his power at 135lbs, while he also brought back his leg kicks which were a key in the win.
After the fight, Aldo called out TJ Dillashaw and that is the fight to make. With Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan having to do their rematch sometime in 2022, the top of the division is murky. With Aldo and Dillashaw both being massive names and at the top, it’s a fight that can headline a Fight Night card or be on the same card as Sterling-Yan 2 where the winner would get a title shot.
Rob Font
Rob Font fought well but it just wasn’t enough to beat Jose Aldo. Even though he lost, he is back to the drawing board in the stacked bantamweight division.
Font is still a top-five guy but will need time off after that fight. He will likely return in the second quarter of 2022 and when he does, a logical next fight is against Cory Sandhagen. Both men are coming off hard-fought losses but are both in the top-five. The winner would be right back in title contention while the loser would have to start fighting below them to keep their spot in the top-five.
