Urijah Faber Defends ‘Gentleman’ UFC Commentator Snoop Dogg
There were mixed feelings when Snoop Dogg got a job commentating for the UFC. He was given his own ‘Snoop Cast’ audio option, along with Urijah Faber, for Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. The business decision was made even more polarizing, after Snoop went off on Conor McGregor after his loss to Floyd Mayweather. There was some backlash, but Faber appeared on Submission Radio to defendizzle his broadcast partner, fah shizzle.
“Man, I thought [Snoop Dogg] did amazing. The funny thing is, you know, what you get with Snoop is just a guy that’s being extremely real and passionate. It was cool. It was just a different type of eyeball on the fights. He’s a guy that’s just saying exactly what he sees. If a guy is laying on his back, he’s not thinking, ‘oh, is he going to go for a knee bar?,’ he’s thinking, ‘why is the guy laying on his back?'”

“He has a good knowledge of the sport from a spectator level, but it was fun to kind of teach him and just realize that like, this is just purely watching a fight with Snoop Dogg, not him having to be biased, not him having to do this – even I made a joke that he was gonna be banned from the first fight after the Conor McGregor fight because I think he was probably drunk and had said some stuff that pissed a bunch of people off, but, I mean, the guy’s just real, so I can appreciate that and I had a lot of fun. The way he treated me and other people was pretty great, he was a gentleman and as real as it gets.”
That’s exactly what the experience was supposed to be about: “This is just purely watching a fight with Snoop Dogg.” He’s not an MMA analyst, he’s like the guy you invite over to your house because it’s fun to see how he reacts to things. Snoop is sippin’ Gin and juice, as well as smoking weed on air, and people who tune in expect that. The brand may no be popular with everyone, but he seems to be popular with the fighters, or at least one fighter in particular.
“It felt like a movie because I walked into his trailer and he’s got his body guards, he’s got a couple of other people in there, and there was like three joints going around. “I was puffin’ and passin’, trying to keep up, and they had a TV in there playing highlights of my fight, so were watching that and smoking, it was so much fun. It was only like 20 or 30 minutes, but it was a good time and a memory forever.” – Sean O’Malley speaking to MMA Fighting.
