UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes has been on a tear of the women’s bantamweight division over the past two years, going on a 5-fight win streak that saw her finish four of her five opponents. In addition, nearly one year ago, Nunes picked up a first round submission win over Miesha Tate to claim the women’s bantamweight championship in the main event of UFC 200. After winning the belt, Nunes turned around and defended the belt at UFC 207 against none other than former champion Ronda Rousey in a fight that served as Rousey’s highly anticipated return to the Octagon. When the two met in the Octagon, it took just 48 seconds for Nunes to finish Rousey with strikes.

Last week, at the UFC Summer Kickoff press conference, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes was joined onstage by her UFC 213 opponent, Valentina Shevchenko. The pair will scrap July 8th for Nunes’ belt in a highly anticipated rematch with even higher stakes this time around. While the pair certainly talked quite a bit of trash during the press conference, it was the staredown that followed which made headlines. When the two met in the center of the stage after the press conference ended for a stare down, sparks flew. Amanda Nunes seemingly escalated the situation unprovoked, however now she is looking to set the record straight.

The bout will be a rematch of an early 2016 fight, which Nunes won with a close split decision. In advance of this anticipated women’s bantamweight title fight, Shevchenko has been honing her tools at Tiger Muay Thai in postcard-worthy Phuket, Thailand. While the purpose of her visit to Thailand has been improving her skills for her fight with Nunes, she’s also found some time for a sizzling photoshoot in her tropical surroundings.

When Kyrgyzstani bantamweight Valentina Shevchenko submitted the streaking Julianna Peña in January of this year, she earned herself a shot at reigning bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, who she lost a competitive decision to in early 2016. While we have known for some time now that Shevchenko would get the next crack at bantamweight gold, however, the date and location of her opportunity to do so have not yet been made official. We do, of course, have plenty of reason to believe this title fight will occur at UFC 213 this July 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada. BJPenn.com previously reported that this bout was in the works for the card, while Twitter user Dizz went on record saying this was the case.

The win made it 2-straight for Shevchenko, and secured her a rematch with Amanda Nunes, this time for the women’s bantamweight championship. With that being said, there had been no official date set for a potential Nunes vs. Shevchenko II showdown, leading many fight fans to wonder when the fight will take place.

Though Peña was expected to have a significant grappling edge in this purported style clash, Shevchenko instead flaunted her grappling chops, taking her foe down twice in the first round, and submitting her with a slick armbar in the second.

Last night, the UFC touched down in The Mile-High City, Denver, Colorado, with UFC on Fox 23. This 12-fight card was an epic one, as a whopping eight of its bouts ended with stoppages, including the evening’s main event, which pitted Kyrgyzstani striker Valentina Shevchenko against American grappling specialist Julianna Peña. In advance of this fight, the striking advantage seemed to rely firmly in the corner of Shevchenko, while Peña was believed to have an advantage on the mat. Ultimately, however, Shevchenko was able to showcase some real evolutions in her game, taking Peña down twice in the first round, and submitting her with a dazzling armbar in the second. The tap occurred at the 4:29 mark of the second frame.
