Vicente Luque believes a fight with Colby Covington could be the ticket for him to secure a UFC welterweight title shot. Luque (21-7 MMA) is scheduled to meet up with Belal Muhammad (20-3 MMA) at UFC Fight Night main event on Saturday, April 16th. It will be their second fight, the first taking place back in November of 2016 where ‘The Silent Assassin’ came out the victor.

Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad will be running it back. Luque and Muhammad first met in 2016 and will now be fighting again five-and-a-half years later. According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the two will headline a Fight Night card on April 16 which serves as a crucial fight for the welterweight division.

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns says the UFC tried to match him up against Vicente Luque, but both fighters declined the matchup. Burns and Luque are two of the top-five ranked welterweights in the UFC, and both men are currently without a fight booked, so it makes sense that they fight, right? Not so fast. Not only do both fighters train together at Sanford MMA, but they are also incredibly close friends and essentially “brothers,” as Luque told BJPenn.com’s Cole Shelton back in April. Luque said then that he would never fight Burns due to their close familial relationship.

UFC welterweight contender Vicente Luque is interested in a title eliminator fight against Leon Edwards, saying “it would remove any doubts.” Edwards is the No. 3 ranked contender in the UFC welterweight division, and Luque is the No. 4 ranked fighter. Edwards was supposed to fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 269 next month, but that fight fell apart after Masvidal pulled out with an injury. With Masvidal out, Edwards was taken off the card. There is a chance that he could be re-booked for another fight in early 2022, but he has said that he plans on waiting for the next title shot against UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, who recently beat Colby Covington again.

Right now, it seems like the UFC is more interested in booking Diaz against Khamzat Chimaev, but if you ask Luque, this is still the fight that he hopes the UFC books.

Usman and Covington first met back at UFC 245 in December 2019, with Usman winning the fight via fifth-round TKO near the end of a back-and-forth war. The rematch takes place next month at UFC 268 and it promises to be one of the best fights of the year. Luque, in particular, will be very invested in watching the fight himself. As one of the welterweight division’s top contenders, Luque could eventually face the winner of this fight for the belt down the road. But if you ask Luque, he believes he knows who will win.

Luque is one of the hottest fighters at 170lbs right now as he’s won his last four fights in a row — all by stoppage — including a D’Arce choke submission win over Michael Chiesa at UFC 265 that moved him into the top-five of the UFC welterweight division. Luque has since then called for a title shot against the champion Usman, but the champ is set to take on Covington in a rematch later this year at UFC 268. Luque submitted Michael Chiesa with a D’Arce choke to move into the top-five rankings at 170lbs. “The Silent Assassin” has now won his last four fights in a row — all by stoppage — and he is closing in on a title shot against Usman. The odds are that Leon Edwards will get the title shot before Luque since he has a head-to-head win over him, but Luque believes that his ability to put on exciting fights and be a fresh new contender for Usman puts him ahead of Edwards. In fact, he also believes that he has more weapons to challenge the champion. Speaking to Combate, Luque explained why he is the man to beat Usman.

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is more interested in fighting Vicente Luque than Leon Edwards, according to manager Ali Abdelaziz. Luque submitted Michael Chiesa with a first-round D’Arce choke to improve his win streak to five straight fights and make it into the top-five rankings at 170lbs. Unlike many of the other top contenders in the weight class, Luque has not yet fought Usman, which automatically makes him an intriguing option for the champ for an upcoming title defense. Usman has his hands full at the moment with Colby Covington, who he fights in a rematch at UFC 268, but according to Abdelaziz, the champ is already looking at Luque as a rival.

Top-ranked welterweight title contender Vicente Luque reacted after submitting Michael Chiesa with a D’Arce choke at UFC 265. Luque was coming into this fight against Chiesa off of a D’Arce choke victory over Tyron Woodley in his last fight, and he went back to his signature move here against Chiesa at UFC 265. After Luque was able to thwart off an early rear-naked choke submission attempt by Chiesa, he then locked him up with the D’Arce choke for the victory. It was the fourth win in a row for “The Silent Assassin,” and his 10th win in his last 11 fights inside the Octagon. With the victory over Chiesa, Luque improved to 14-3 in the UFC with 13 finishes.

Burns defeated Stephen Thompson last month at UFC 264 to solidify his spot in the top-five at 170lbs, while Luque submitted Michael Chiesa at UFC 265 to announce that he is a top contender, too. Naturally, with both Burns and Luque coming off of big wins and being ranked in the top-five of the stacked UFC welterweight division, there are some fans who would like to see this matchup next. However, with Burns and Luque being good friends and training partners, “Durinho” says he will never fight against “The Silent Assassin.”
