VIDEO | emotional backstage footage after Cody Garbrandt’s UFC 207 win
One of the biggest moments of UFC 207, the UFC’s final card of the year 2016, was Cody Garbrandt’s title-winning defeat of Dominick Cruz. Garbrandt earned this victory with a lopsided unanimous decision in a performance that would become a late entrant into the 2016 Upset of the Year debate.
It was an emotional win for Garbrandt for several reasons. It marked the end of months of trash talk with Cruz. It was a sorely needed win in the age-old rivalry between Cruz and Team Alpha Male founder Urijah Faber – Garbrandt’s mentor. It marked the completion of a long-standing promise that Garbrandt made to his young friend Maddux Maple: that he would win a UFC title if Maple won his battle with Leukemia. Both succeeded on their missions.
In a preview for the UFC 207 edition of the popular series The Thrill and The Agony, we witness Garbrandt’s emotional backstage interactions with his Team Alpha Male stablemates, Faber, and perhaps most touchingly, the young cancer survivor Maddux Maple. This preview also features backstage footage of Amanda Nunes who speedily walloped Ronda Rousey in UFC 207’s main event.

With his defeat of Cruz, Garbrandt improved to a perfect 11-0. His 6 most recent wins have all occurred in the UFC’s Octagon, where he has scored knockout wins over Marcus Brimage, Augusto Mendes, Thomas Almeida and Takeya Mizugaki, and decisions over Henry Briones and Cruz. The loss is just the second on Cruz’s record. He’s now 22-2 in sum.
By defeating Rousey, Nunes made her first successful defense of the women’s bantamweight title, which she won from Miesha Tate in July. She’s now 14-4 in sum, while Rousey is 12-2 overall
