VIDEO | Chael Sonnen weighs in on possible Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero rematch

By Tom Taylor - February 12, 2018

Having thumped the former champ Luke Rockhold to a crushing, third-round knockout win over the weekend, Yoel Romero has reasserted himself as the top contender in the UFC middleweight division. He is now expected to rematch reigning champion Robert Whittaker some time later this year, when both parties are healthy and fighting fit.

Whittaker and Romero first fought in the main event of UFC 213, in July of 2016. On that night, Whittaker weathered a bit of early trouble to capture a unanimous decision win – and the title.

In the opinion of current Bellator MMA star, and ever insightful MMA analyst Chael Sonnen, the outcome of a Whittaker-Romero rematch could easily be the same. It could also end more decisively in Whittaker’s favor, as he’s in the prime of his fighting career, and Romero is not getting any younger.

Sonnen broke this possible rematch down on a recent edition of Beyond The Fight. Watch his breakdown in the video at the top of this post.

“We know that Whittaker knows how to beat Romero,” Sonnen says in this video. “He’s already done it before. And Romero can beat Whittaker, because that fight was super close. But history does say, if a younger fighter beats an older fighter and they rematch, the younger fighter will win again, only easier. But that fight was very competitive.”

“That’s a fight that we’re looking forward to, and [there could possibly] be a different outcome,” Sonnen concluded later.
