Late last month, Coach Edmond Tarverdyan watched his star pupil get crushed in just 48 seconds. That star pupil, of course, was Ronda Rousey, who was mauled by reigning bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes in the main event of UFC 207. The fight marked Rousey’s first steps into the Octagon since a November, 2015 knockout loss to Holly Holm, and it really couldn’t have gone worse for her. Given this, it should come as no surprise that coach Edmond did not react well to it.
See his reaction to the moment the fight was stopped in the clip at the top of this video.
Rousey, of course, is not coach Edmond’s only big-name fighter. He’s also the handler of UFC heavyweight Travis Browne, who will take on Derrick Lewis in what looks like it could be a make-or-break fight at UFC 208 in February. That said, Rousey is the fighter that put his Glendale, California camp on the map, so his frustration in the video above is certainly understandable.
At the moment, it is not clear what the future holds for Rousey, who is now on the first two-fight losing streak of her game-changing career. Though her mother seems to want her to hang up the gloves, her most recent post to Instagram seems to insinuate an attempt to get back on the horse. Time will tell.
Prior to her knockout losses to Nunes and Holm, Rousey went a perfect 12-0 to begin her career. In the early phases of that stretch, she won and defended the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight title. She was then crowned the inaugural UFC women’s bantamweight champion, and would defend this title 6 times, scoring stoppages over Liz Carmouche, Miesha Tate, Sara McMann, Alexis Davis, Cat Zingano and Bethe Correia.
Do you think Ronda Rousey will ever step foot in the Octagon again? If she does, do you think she needs to leave coach Edmond Tarverdyan behind to succeed? Sound off, PENN Nation!
