Fight fans were rather confused Friday afternoon during the UFC 199 weigh-ins when fighters skipped stepping on the scales to weigh-in, and went straight to staredowns after having their pre-recorded weights read.
Under the new California weigh-in policy, fighters have a period of several hours in which they can weigh-in earlier in the day. The change in procedure is to give fighters more time to rehydrate before they step into the Octagon Saturday night.
In addition, fighters have to undergo screenings to make sure they aren’t severely dehydrated. If a fighter is severely dehydrated, a doctor will aid them in coming up with a plan to adequately rehydrate before they step in the Octagon the following day. If a fighter is too severely dehydrated, they will be pulled from the card.
In the video above you can see UFC President Dana White discussing the new procedure.
