Last night, in the main event of UFC 210, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier scored a second-round submission win over Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, defending his crown as he did. In the moments after the fight, Rumble surprised by announcing his intention to retire from the sport of mixed martial arts. As Rumble made this announcement, Cormier took a moment to engage in some trash talk with British striker Jimi Manuwa, who is arguably the number-one-contender in the UFC light heavyweight division.
During his own post-fight Octagon interview, Cormier was asked by color commentator Joe Rogan what he had said to Manuwa. He explained that he had told Manuwa to stop pretending that he actually wanted a title shot. In a video posted to The Fight Life YouTube channel, Cormier and Manuwa’s heated, through-the-cage exchange can be heard in full.
“You know you can’t beat me, Jimi,” Cormier assured.
“One punch,” Manuwa replied.
Shortly after this exchange, Manuwa gave his take on the ordeal in an interview with the UFC’s Megan Olivi. See his response below.
“It shows the he knows, and he’s noticing me,” Manuwa said. “He knows that, for me, it’s just one punch. One shot, one kill. He knows that as well. He’s trying to front and see if he can get into my mind, but that’s not happening. That’s not happening.”
“I can tell he’s rattled,” Manuwa continued. “It doesn’t matter who won, Rumble or DC. It’s my time. It’s my time and these people know.”
In his last fight, Manuwa scored a crushing, first-round knockout over Corey Anderson. In his most recent bout before that, he scored a similarly impressive win, taking out Ovince St. Preux with a violent volley in the second round.
