VIDEO | Fighter barely able to stand on scale from weight cut still allowed to fight in Japan
There was quite a bit of commotion with the UFC 216 weigh-ins leading up to this past weekend’s UFC card as Kevin Lee needed an extra hour to make the interim lightweight title fight weight. However, Lee who struggled to make weight looked amazing in comparison to another fighter who also stepped on the scale to compete over the weekend.
Strawweight Daniel Lima fought at the Pancrase 290 event in Japan on Sunday but when he weighed in for his fight against Daichi Kitakata, Lima looked far from being able to compete in a fight the following day.
“Pac-Man” had to be basically carried to the scale as he could barely stand on his own for his weight to be taken.
Both Lima’s team and the Pancrase promotion decided to let Lima fight in his condition and after missing weight by two pounds.
Lima told MMA Fighting that he cut 16 pounds in two days and fighting overseas had an effect on him.
“Since it was my first time outside of Brazil and I had no experience, I thought it would be easy,” Lima said. “It was tough, painful.”
Lima said that after weighing in and rehydrating that he was still going to fight and told Pancrase officials, “Of course, I’m ready and strong.” Lima admitted that he was “really bad” after weighing in but did manage to fight for three rounds during competition where the judges awarded Kitakata the decision.
“They gave it to him,” Lima said of the decision where he felt he won two of the three rounds. “I was weak due to the extreme weight cut (at the weigh-ins), but I was really fine, 100 percent for the fight.”
What are your thoughts on cutting weight in mixed martial arts competition? Do you agree or disagree with Joe Rogan that weight cutting should be eliminated from the sport and instead have athletes fight at their natural weight? Let’s discuss this in the comment section.
