MMA is a beautiful sport, but it can also be a dangerous one. Any long-time fan of the sport has witnessed dozens of gruesome injuries, ranging from nasty cuts, to broken legs, to busted toes and even fractured skulls. This, of course, is why ringside physicians and referees are so crucial to our sport. Their watchful eyes and diligent efforts are what keep the fighters we watch intact and healthy.

Yet back in December of 2016, when a fighter dislocated his left shoulder after throwing a looping overhand right, it was not the ring-side doctor that saved him. Instead, it was his opponent. Watch this incredible incident in the video at the top of this post.

And now for a bit of additional context:

This fight occurred at “Mannheim Harbor Brawl 5” in Germany. The taller fighter (the one who dislocates his shoulder), is Poland’s Arkadiusz Wroblewski. The shorter fighter (our unlikely doctor) is Georgia’s Paata Tschapelia. Shortly after resetting Wroblewski’s dislocated shoulder, Tschapelia put him down with a blistering, one-punch knockout, which is unfortunately not included in this video.

Wroblewski has not stepped back into the ring since this bout. Given that he sustained a dislocated shoulder and a concussion in less than four minutes of ring-time, it’s hard to say if he ever will.

Tschapelia, meanwhile, extended his win-streak to three with this defeat of Wroblewski. The 31-year-old is now 3-1 overall, with one win coming by way of knockout, one coming via submission, and another coming by way of TKO.

Do you think Tschapelia was right to pop Wroblewski’s shoulder back into place, or should he have stayed in his corner and let the doctor handle it? Sound off in the comments, PENN Nation!
