VIDEO | Fighters pick winner of Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor

Tonight in New York, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will step into the Octagon for a highly anticipated lightweight title fight. The fight will give McGregor the opportunity to become the first simultaneous two-division UFC champion, eight months after he was scheduled to contest for the lightweight title at UFC 196 against Rafael dos Anjos.

While McGregor and dos Anjos were slated to fight on March 5th in the main event of UFC 196, dos Anjos backed out of the fight just days before the event due to a broken foot sustained in training. Ultimately, he was replaced by Nate Diaz, and the fight was moved to welterweight, where Diaz handed McGregor the first loss of his UFC career.

Now, on the heels of McGregor avenging his loss to Diaz at UFC 202 back in August, he has the opportunity to potentially claim the lightweight championship tonight in New York.

Ahead of the fight, the MMA community is split down the middle in regards to their picks for who will win the fight. While McGregor, who is the Vegas favorite in the fight, has proven to be extremely accurate and extremely lethal with his strikes, leading him to a 7-1 record inside the Octagon, some believe that Eddie Alvarez’ aggressive style, and destructive power will be too much for McGregor to handle, ultimately resulting in Alvarez successfully defending his lightweight title for the first time since winning the belt back in July.

After dropping a unanimous decision to Donald Cerrone in his UFC debut, Alvarez bounced back by picking up back to back split decision wins over Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis to earn himself a crack at then-lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos prior to UFC 200 in July.

When Alvarez and dos Anjos stepped into the Octagon, it took just over half a round for Alvarez to finish dos Anjos via TKO, earning himself the UFC lightweight championship after nearly 15 years competing professionally in MMA.
