VIDEO | Fighters weigh in on if Conor McGregor deserves equity in the UFC
Current UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor is the first fighter in history to hold two UFC weight class titles simultaneously.
“The Notorious” accomplished the feat at UFC 205 by beating Eddie Alvarez to take his crown as the UFC lightweight king while still holding his title as the 145-pound UFC featherweight champion.
Following McGregor’s historic win at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the “Notorious” told the media at the post-fight press conference that he wants equity in the UFC if they want to see him compete again.
“Who owns the company now? People have shares,” McGregor told the media. “Celebrities. Conan O’Brien owns the UFC now. Where’s my share? Where’s my equity?
“If I’m the one that’s bringing this, they’ve got to come talk to me now. I’ve got both belts, family on the way. If you want me to stick around, if you want me to keep doing (this), let’s talk. But I want the ownership now. I want the equal share. I want what I deserve, what I’ve earned.”
Fellow UFC fighters were asked by MMA Junkie what their thoughts were on Conor McGregor demanding equity in the company and there were many mixed reactions. However, one common thought amongst many of the fighters speaking in the video is that Conor McGregor can do what he wants at this point.
Interestingly, one of the celebrity investors who is willing to sell some of his shares to “The Notorious” is Mark Wahlberg.
“Well, he’s gotta cut the check,” Wahlberg told TMZ if McGregor really wants a stake in the company. “Everybody cuts a check. If you want a piece, you gotta pay for it.”
