Surging UFC middleweight contender Gegard Mousasi picked up his fifth win in a row at last night’s UFC 210 pay-per-view event in Buffalo, New York by earning a second-round TKO victory over former division champion Chris Weidman.
Unfortunately for Mousasi, his victory over Weidman came in somewhat of a controversial fashion.
Mousasi landed a pair of knees on Weidman midway through the fights second round that had Weidman in a world of hurt.
However, the referee thought that the second knee that Mousasi landed came while Weidman’s hands were on the canvas, which would make the strike illegal.
After watching that replay, it was clear that Wediman’s hands had left the floor just micro-seconds prior to Mousasi landing the second knee.
With that said, the strike was eventually deemed legal and after some confusion inside the cage the referee called a stop to the contest after talking with the doctor.
Gegard Mousasi spoke about the controversial victory at last night’s UFC 210 post-fight press conference.
“Well he (Chris Weidman) was winning the first-round simply because of his wrestling. He didn’t do any damage. I was fighting. The second round I came back. I hurt him. I felt he was getting tired. He took me down, I got up. Second time he shot, I stuffed it and I kneed him. You know at the end of the day I am fighting. The guy, I have a lot of respect for Weidman I don’t want to bad mouth him. But if you want to play smart and try to take advantage of the rules. That is not my fault. I am fighting. If you want to put your hands down so I cannot knee you. You’re fighting. Don’t try and take advantage of the rules. I am fighting and at the end of the day it was legal. That is what everyone says now. It was legal. I don’t make the rules. It was legal and I felt that he didn’t want to continue. I think everyone saw that. He didn’t want to continue. How is that my fault? I don’t give a fuck. I like the guy, he is a tough opponent. But at the end of the day he didn’t want to fight. I felt he was getting tired from all those takedowns he was trying to get. I am fighting. I don’t know.”
As for an immediate rematch, Gegard had this to say.
“Well if he wants his rematch I can give it to him. But at the end of the day I am chasing the title. Whoever, if I fight Bisping I think I will be a favorite. Fighting Weidman is tough. First round he won. Second round I came back and hurt him. Whatever, I don’t know. I am not the match maker.”
Gegard, who is now a free agent, is looking to get paid what he is worth in his next contract.
“Well I should get paid. I have defeated Jacare (Souza), I have defeated Mark Hunt, I have defeated Dan Henderson, I have defeated Vitor Belfort, I have defeated Weidman. Who else? All of these guys I have defeated and they are making more money than me. What is it? My nationality? Do you want me to dye my hair blonde? What the fuck? I am one of the best, so I should get paid as one of the best! So there is nothing wrong with me. Just pay me what I am worth. I am a fair guy. I am not asking for more than I deserve. You think I cannot beat Bisping? I cannot talk like him what is it?”
